Lubbock County Corn Maze to host tribute to veterans

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal - 9/14/2018

Sept. 14--An afternoon program called "A Veterans Celebration at the Maze," has been scheduled from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, two miles east of Shallowater on FM 1294.

The event at the Corn Maze entertainment park, scheduled to open with a color guard, is designed to honor veterans and provide education about benefits, services and support.

It will include instruction in proper ways for flag disposal, a 21-rifle salute by the American Legion, flag folding ceremony, a Missing Man table, and a speech at 3:30 p.m. by Steve Oien, commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

Organizers hope to arrange a fly-over at 4 p.m.

A station titled "Meet the Heroes," will have autograph books available for children to construct, with an opportunity to meet veterans from past wars.

Students from the Margaret Talkington School for Young Women Leaders also plan to help make autograph books for children to obtain autographs from veterans who are present.

Toy soldiers will be given to anyone who commits to pray for a deployed soldier in the Army, Marine Corps, Navy or Air Force.

According to Jane Bromley, an organizer and editor of Senior Link, ABC Bank plans to give away 1,000 dog tags.

Admission to the nearby Corn Maze, operated by James and Patti Simpson, will be free to veterans. For others, it is available for an admission price of $10, with children ages four and younger admitted free.
