Patriotic Service Quilts presented to St. Henry Veterans

The Rogersville Review - 6/12/2018

ROGERSVILLE - On Sunday, June 10, 2018, the Veterans of St. Henry Catholic Church were honored in a very special presentation during which they were presented with beautiful Patriotic Service Quilts made just for them.

Father Bart O'Kere gave a special blessing to the quilts that were folded and displayed on a table at the front of the church.

A moving presentation was given to honor and commemorate the service and sacrifice of the Veterans, "to thank them for their commitment to uphold their oath of military service and to recognize that without their sacrifice we would not enjoy the freedom and liberty in this country that we are privilege to have today," said Lena Hewitt.

The 24 Veterans were called forward to each receive a handmade quilt to respect and honor their service. Family members accepted the quilt if the Veteran was unable to attend the presentation.

Receiving quilts from presenter Teve Williams were: Melvin Braun, Jerry Bingham, Beverly Carmack, wife Tammy for James Collins, Larry Czernejewski, Alan DeGroff, Stephen Derosia, Maurice DeWitte, John Dzurenka, Joseph Funaro, Lenard Gilreath, William Hewitt, Patrick Knopp, Josefina Marcelo, Barbara for Terrance McDermott, Michael Opiela, grandson Damian for his grandfather William Polizzoto, Richard Theis, wife Mara for Peter Torok, Anthony Wilkosz, and Terry Wojtas.

Veterans Antonio DiGirolamo, Mark Meyers and Albert Widhalm were not present and their quilts will be given to them at a later date.

Special thanks to the quilters: Earline Egbert, Teve Williams, Veronica Weaver, Paula Burslie, Aileen Kressin, Jessa Baker, and Lena Hewitt. Also to the assistants, Janet Blankenship, Lucy English, Laura Toth and Kris Derosia; and a big thank you to the Knights of Columbus who provided a monetary grant to offset partial cost of the quilts.
