Local veterans group hosts hiring event

The Star Democrat - 5/17/2017

EASTON - Local military veterans and their spouses will have an opportunity to sit down with several local employers to discuss jobs and resources that cater to their unique needs.

The hiring event sponsored by the Upper Shore Veterans Job Club will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, June 2, at the Talbot Career Center, 301 Bay St., Suite 301 in Easton.

"Employers will bring applications and give a broad briefing to everyone in the room," Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialist Sharon Egerson said. "Then they will meet one-on-one with (prospective employees). It's more like a job club; it's not a job fair."

The job club meets every two months with an average attendance of about 20. The hiring event is open to all veterans and spouses of veterans regardless of their affiliation with the club.

Employers who will be on hand for the hiring event are Unisite Design Inc. of Denton, Dixon Valve and Coupling of Chestertown, Harbourtowne Resort in St. Michaels, Crystal Steel of Federalsburg and Delmar, and Lowe's Home Improvement.

Open jobs include machinist, maintenance custodian, industrial health and safety tech, production supervisor, QA tech, warehouse, customer service rep, inside sales, testing tech, mechanical engineer, shipping supervisor, CDL/ material handler, CAD designer, production worker, assistant horticulturalist, assistant superintendent, chemical fertilizer specialist, golf course laborer, irrigation specialist, seasonal gardener, welder, fabricator, CNC machinist, night supervisor, installed sales associate, sales coordinator, sales specialist, seasonal loaders/waterers/stockers and sales manager.

The Talbot Career Center as well as employer human resources personnel will help attendees with the application process. Resources concerning homelessness, insurance and medical help will be available as well.
