Arts council to photograph veterans for upcoming show

Appeal-Democrat - 2/17/2017

Feb. 17--Semi-formal portraits of military veterans, taken by veterans, is the next project planned by Yuba Sutter Arts to bring positive reinforcement of their service and prepare for a month-long art show exhibit in March in Marysville.

The upcoming show is to feature the new portraits and veterans' bronze face castings created in late 2016.

The "Portraits of Veterans" Project has veterans in Yuba and Sutter counties, with help and advice from a professional photographer, take photos of each other at a portable photo studio during sessions planned in the community.

Getting veterans involved is a double win, said David Read, executive director Yuba Sutter Arts. "It's all about the veterans on both sides of the lens."

All veterans in Yuba and Sutter counties are invited.

During the sessions, participating veterans will be photographed against a plain background in high resolution.

Photo sessions are scheduled at:

Yuba College -- 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and Saturday at the Veterans Resource Office, building 725, 2088 N. Beale Road, Linda.

Yuba Sutter Arts Gallery -- 10 a.m.-2 p.m.Feb. 25 at 624 E St., Marysville.

Museum of Forgotten Warriors -- 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.March 4 at 5865 A Road, Linda.

Advance registration can be done by contacting Read at david@yubasutterarts.org or 749-8065.

The final photos, in 20-inch by 30-inch black and white enlargements, and the individuals' submitted biographies will be on display at the Marysville art gallery through March.

Each veteran also receives a print or electronic version of the portrait.

A reception for the "Portraits of Veterans Project" is from 5 p.m.-7 p.m.March 10 at the Yuba-Sutter Arts gallery, 624 E St.

Veterans are an important part of the Yuba-Sutter community, Read said. The Arts Council plans to continue having projects available to involve local veterans.

"It's something we need to do because it's the right thing to do," he said.

In addition to the bronze face castings, Yuba Sutter Arts also hosted a Veterans Art Park on display in Marysville.
