BRIEF: Newfane's Veterans Park nearing completion

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal - 1/10/2017

Jan. 10--NEWFANE -- On Newfane'sMain Street, there is a new place to honor veterans of all ages.

Newfane's Veterans Memorial Park wrapped up construction around Thanksgiving, supervisor Tim Horanburg said.

The small park, sandwiched between Newfane Town Hall and Key Bank on Route 78, features a stone path and a central area with benches. The final touch in the Veterans Park will be a five-sided monument in the center, representing the branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

The monument will be made of Vermont granite. It will be shipped to Newfane and installed after completion, Horanburg said.

The Veterans Memorial Park is part of Newfane's Main Street streetscaping project. The project also included new sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, high-visibility sidewalks and shrubbery improvements.

Eighty percent of the $270,000 project's cost came from a federal grant that Newfane was awarded through the Transportation Enhancement Program project in 2014. The remaining 20 percent came from the town's fund balance.

The Newfane American Legion assisted in the design of the memorial park, Horanburg added.

A small ribbon-cutting ceremony will be scheduled for May.
