FRIDAY FIVE: Veterans exhibit to open at Artisan Center

Richmond Register - 1/18/2019

Jan. 18--Welcome to the Friday Five, where The Register asks five questions to preview local events or highlight area artists.

The Kentucky Artisan Center is set to be the home for a travelling exhibit by the Kentucky Art Council titled, The Kentucky Veterans Project in the Center's lobby. This exhibit includes more than 40 works by Kentucky veterans and veteran family members. The exhibit opens this weekend. The Artisan Center's Gwen Heffner provides more details.

1 What is the Kentucky Veterans Project exhibit?

The Kentucky Arts Council in Frankfort put together this travelling exhibit highlighting the artwork of military veterans and their families. The exhibit features 42 works by 41 artists from across the state. Most of the works are two-dimensional and represent a wide range of subject matter and mediums. The inspiration for the exhibit came from discussions the organization Americans for the Arts has been having with the U.S. Department of Defense's Creative Forces initiative. The Kentucky Arts Council wanted to do something to highlight the creativity of our own veterans while honoring their sacrifices and service to our country. The Kentucky Artisan Center is pleased to be one of the first locations for this travelling exhibit. Showcased in the Center's lobby, the works include everything from photographs to mixed media images.

2 What can people expect to see at the exhibit?

There is an amazing array of expression. There are paintings, photos, stained glass and mixed media works with subject matter that ranges from very personal reflections on war and sacrifice to pride and patriotism. While the exhibit doesn't have a specific theme, these veteran artists and veteran family members offer an eye-opening reflection of what military service means for veterans and their families. The exhibit also includes numerous works by children of veterans. The installation at the Kentucky Artisan Center groups the works by common threads such as: patriotism, military symbols, landscapes, abstract images, portraits of animals as well as subjects valued by each artist veteran.

3 How long will the exhibit be at the Artisan Center?

The exhibit opens on Saturday, Jan. 19, and will be on display through March 2. Located in the Center's lobby -- it is easily viewed and handicapped accessible.

4 Are there any local connections in the exhibit?

There are several Madison County veterans in the exhibit. Army Veteran Greg Elswick has El Diablo Art Studio in Richmond and Air Force Veteran Bert Norris is also from Richmond. Berea native son and Army Veteran Damon Farmer also has a painting in the exhibit. Farmer is well-known for his amazing sand sculptures and now lives in Versailles.

5 When does the exhibit open and when can people see it?

The exhibit opens Saturday and will be on display through March 2. The exhibit is free to the public and the Center is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. After March 2, the exhibit travels to the Kentucky Art Council's Kentucky Craft Market at the Kentucky Horse ParkMarch 15-17, 2019.
