Honoring heroes on Veterans Day

The Daily Record - 11/17/2018

NORTHWESTERN DISTRICT — Northwestern Middle School students in Mid White’s sixth-grade class celebrated America’s veterans on Sunday, hosting a Heroes 5K to support Stepping Strong.

Leading up to the Veterans Day race, the students wrote research papers focusing on America’s public safety heroes including those in law enforcement, fire protection and all the branches of the military. At the end of the paper, the students wrote how they could show their honor, gratitude and respect for these heroes that keep them safe from harm.

Nearly 90 runners and walkers participated in the 5K that began with a Heroes Walk, honoring the veterans in attendance. The race course was lined with American flags and markers shaped like the Marvel comic book character Punisher with the names of local veterans and branches of the military printed on them.

Proceeds from the race benefited the Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation, which fuels research and clinical programs in trauma healing and limb reconstruction at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The sixth-grade class also will team up with the second-grade class to work with Northwestern Ruritans to collect, pack and write meaningful notes to be mailed to Northwestern military alumni.
